Another Should Be Standard UIpgrade For Your Glock

For all of you who own Glocks out there, this should be the second piece you upgrade on your brand new Glock right after you finish installing the Glock Extended Slide Release ]which is standard on the G34 and G35 models[. In fact, just go ahead and plan on replacing both components while you have the slide pulled off the frame ]you will need to remove the lower locking pin in the locking block to swap the slide release, or if you removed both pins you need to reinsert the upper pin first or you''ll run into interference problems with the spring above the hole on the slide release[. Swapping out the slide lock is quick and simple once you have the slide removed.....just take a small screwdriver, push downwards on the slide lock spring ]actually a flat spring[ which pushes straight up against the bottom of the slide lock, and while holding the spring down you can either fish the slide lock out one side or you can turn the Glock up on one side and the slide lock will drop out with the spring still pushed down. To reinstall the new extended slide lock, take a close look at the positioning that the original one was in and you''ll notice that the small cutout in the center of the slide release is pointed down so that the spring pushes upwards squarely into the cutout area, the smooth side goes towards the muzzle and the grooved side goes towards the rear, then while still holding the slide release spring down just push the slide lock back into the frame and line it up with the cutout zone right above the spring, then just take the downwards pressure off of the spring and make sure that the new slide lock is centered and engaged down into the spring itself at the cutout spot. The flat spring serves to apply upwards pressure to keep the slide lock engaged, and pulling down on both sides of the slide lock simultaneously just pushes downwards on that spring and allows the slide lock to clear below the engaging lock on the slide itself ]the flat spring is what makes the piece work, and this flat spring is very easy to remove if necessary by just taking that small screwdriver and pulling upwards slightly on the sides of the spring while alternating sides and pretty soon the spring retaining arm will come right up out of the holding channel that is pointed almost straight downwards ]actually angled backwards about 10 degrees towards the trigger, but close to vertical[, so the spring is basically just a friction fit in the frame and easily removed if necessary, and resembles a 90 degree piece of flat spring material with a small bend at the upper rear tip at the slide lock plate. Of course, it takes 3 times longer to explain it here than it does to actually swap out the piece, but just pay attention to how the old piece is positioned when it is removed ]top versus bottom, and front versus back[, then reinstall the new lock right back like the old one was.
At first most will think just what the heck is 1 millimeter going to give me on each side of this slide lock release, but believe me that the extra 1 millimeter per side is a huge difference when you go to pull down on the lever to remove the slide assembly! The factory length of 28mm on that lock just does not give you enough room to get a grip on the release to pull both sides down simultaneously, but the 30mm piece ]1 extra mm per side[ makes for a much easier surface to grab with your fingers to both pull and hold down the lock while removing the slide. On the 3rd generation models, there is a slight recessed area around where this slide lock sits down inside, and while the extended lock release does stick out slightly further thus far I have not seen any interference with it hitting against the holster ]it appears to still be just slightly recessed below the outer frame level[.
It''s kind of a toss-up on why Glock puts the 28mm in the new models instead of the 30mm lock release, but it takes small fingers with long fingernails to work the factory length lever, plus the standard slide release on the left side also does not allow for any leverage to move the release down away from the slide to allow it to move forward.....the extended slide release sticks back a couple of extra millimeters plus it is angled outwards a couple of extra millimeters too which allows for a smooth release with a lot less thumb pressure after magazine swaps. Since there would be almost zero cost difference to include both extended pieces as standard equipment, my only guess why they stick with theh more difficult to operate pieces is due to a liability issue from the factory, because the typical factory pieces are definitely more difficult to operate but the slide release is less likely to be accidentally released ]which is why they only include this upgrade on the tactical/practical competition grade models which are more likely to be purchased and used by more highly trained individuals ]if nothing else, the added cost of the G34 and G35 models scare a lot of buyers away, as they typically cost about $75 more right out of the box than a G17 or G22 model, but the added $75 does get you the extended slide release standard as well as a longer barrel and longer sight radius plus a fully adjustable steel rear sight on the G34 and G35 models, and the adjustable sight upgrade is part of the dollar difference ]just to purchase a fully adjustable rear steel sight from Glock is over $30 extra, and even then you''re still stuck with the plastic front sight unless you throw in another $10 or so for a steel front sight with a lockscrew installation from beneathh the sight with some blue Loctite 242 and a 3/16 nutdriver ]while the official Glock front sight installation tool is a 3/16 nutdriver, some nutdriver sets on the market stop at 1/4 instead of going down to 3/16, so double check your nutdriver set to verify it includes a 3/16 size before diving off too deep into swapping the front sight out.....some of the 7-piece nutdriver sets go from 3/16 to 7/16 including 11/32, some go 3/16 to 1/2 excluding the 11/32 which is usually color coded green, and some start at 1/4 and go up to 1/2 including the 11/32, so check to make sure you have a 3/16 one or you may need the special installation tool with the 3/16 nutdriver for swapping front sights. As for purchasing nutdriver sets, Craftsman is the most common one, but I much prefer Klein sets due to their superior grips, and Klein makes both non-magnetic and magnetic model sets as well, plus Klein offers 8 long 1/4 and 5/16 models as well as stubby 1/4 and 5/16 models too which are the 2 most common sizes you will run into especially in refrigeration applications. For the 1/4 and 5/16 models, I''d recommend all 3 available lengths since those are the 2 models you will need the most out of a full nutdriver set, but eventually you will find uses for every size in the whole set......also beware that some cheaper nutdriver sets do not have hollow shafts to allow you to continue driving nuts down on a longer threaded fastener, where most of the better nutdrivers like Craftsman and Kleins have hollow shafts which allow for working on longer fasteners without bottoming out ]and there are pros and cons to going with magnetic or non-magnetic, so I like to keep a set of each handy[.
Oh yeah, one other quickie here before you go changing out to either a steel front sight or a tritium front sight on your Glock......be SURE you use the CORRECT type of Loctite for this application, which in this case would be preferably the blue 242 which is a medium setting type ]actually for threaded connectors larger than 1/4 in diameter, but I guess the manufacturers of the newer sights that use the retaining screw from below want some overkill on holding strength given the pounding that the screw may be subjected to[. In a more realistic setting, the purple Loctite is a lower strength bonding agent for smaller fasteners such as the attaching screw used on the front sight, but most are not aware of the purple Loctite and its'' use for smaller threaded fasteners, and I guess the manufacturers want a bit more holding power for this application ]but the blue Loctite 242 will be more difficult to break loose later on without heating it up first[. The reason that I''m also bringing this issue up is that if you put the red Loctite 262 on a threaded connector this small, you may not be able to break it loose without the use of excessive heat before trying to back out the screw, so I''d highly recommend to avoid Loctite 262 in this application ]it is a hard setting formula that is designed for fasteners of around 1/2 diameter or larger[. There is also a green Loctite that could be used here, but the green is more of a wicking formula that is applied AFTER a fastener is seated, but it is a relatively soft setting type more for holding small lock screws or set screws in position in areas subject to vibration ]such as set screws for locking down adjustable parts[.....the green Loctite is the only wicking formula applied after putting the fasteners in their final position, but most all of the other types of Loctite are applied right before assembly and take some time to cure out in the absense of excessive air contact. If you have any other questions about the various Loctite types available and their specific applications, I have seen all of the types listed a while back on ]I think[ the Permatex website ]I know Permatex made it back in the mid-70''s, so it has been around for at least 35 years already[. I also noticed that some of the type designations have been changed up recently and some new types added to the listing where years ago it was mainly 202, 242, 262, and I believe that 271 and 290 were also on the market for other applications ]I''ve slept a time or two since then, so my numbers may be off a tad[. And, some new types of Loctite have been added for other applications other than just threaded fastener locking, but all of this info is available if you do some research online about the various Loctite formulas and their suggested applications ]and any new nomenclature surrounding them where names may have been changed as formulas may have been tweaked a little[. Basically, I''m just trying to put the message out that all Loctite formulas are NOT created equal, NOR all they all suitable for a single purpose, so don''t just grab up the first bottle that says Loctite on it and go to town before you''re sure which one you have and which one you actually need for your application!

Good product, I use it on all of my Glocks, bought this one for my new Gen 4 Glock 27. There seemed to be an issue getting the gun back together, normally the recoil spring guide slides over the slide lock, but on this gun it wouldn''''t, I had to manually lower the slide lock to get the recoil spring guide past it. Not really an issue, but something to be aware of.

What can I say about this product that hasn''t already been said????.......it''s a 10 Stars item on a 1 to 5 star scale! You might think that 1 extra millimeter won''t make a difference on how this part work, but you will be eating your words after trying it! I don''t know why on earth this part is not the factory standard part unless it goes back to the old liability issue and someone might claim it snagged in their holster, but I''ve heard of zero reports of holster interference with thus wuder component, and the additional extension on each side of the Glock will be 1 millimeter ]for those not familiar with Metrics, that''s an extension of about 1/25th of an inch per side[. Adding this jewel on is about as easy as it gets even for those who are not very mechanically inclined.......just remove the slide and barrel assembly as usual, take a small screwdriver and apply downwards pressure on the flat spring which is positioned right below the middle of this piece, pushing down the spring frees up the old lock to slide out ]but do pay attention that the small cutout in the middle sits down on the flat spring and that the side of the new lever with the grooves faces back towards the locking block[, then simply slide the new piece in the slot while still mainaining pressure downwards on the spring and line the cutout directly above the spring, then just release the spring pressure and the new slide lock lever is in and ready to test out. Replacing this component is almost as simple as using a Glock Disassembly tool to push out a body pin on your pet Glock. After you''ve replaced one of these, you realize it takes well under 60 seconds to both remove the original one and put the new one in ]making sure it is positioned properly before sliding it back into the channel[. That piece will be one of the cheapest and best investments you can make in your Glock but putting the Glock Extended Slide Release on to replace the flat one that you can''t geberate any leverage with to release the slide forward after a magazine swap, but adding the following piece here on ]make sure it is the correct one for your Glock first, as there are a couple of variations[ here is the next job to tackle and again it is only a matter of a few millimeters as there is a triangular shape at the back of the release lever that sits rearwards about 3 additional millimeters and the triangular shape is angled outwards horizontally about 3 millimeters too and it takes all of the work out of releasing a slice locked back in reload position and dropping the end of the lever to chamber the first round in the new magazine.

Pros: It works like its supposed to
Cons: When you go to reassemble your slide, your slide does not slide seamlessly back unto your lower. This one you have to hold it down to reassemble your slide, my stock slide release didnt need me to do that. Overall I am happy with it. Glock Extended Slide Lock......Keep On Glockin''!!!!!

I''m sure this has been said here in the previous reviews many times, but I''ll add in a vote from me too confirming that you NEED this extended slide lock on your GLOCK! Yes, you did read correct on the info where it mentioned that it extends out the slide lock only 1 millimeter on each side of the frame, BUT DON''T LET THE 1 MILLIMETER NUMBER FOOL YOU!!!......that 1 millimeter per side is EXACTLY what the GLOCK NEEDS to make it a ton more user friendly when it comes to needing to operate the slide release lock to slip the slide forward for cleaning, etc.. That small enhancement of the length gives just enough additional grip on each side simultaneously that the days of fighting the release and trying to get both sides down together for a smooth slide release are over, plus it helps a bunch when the fingers are cold and don''t want to work right, and it also helps those fighting arthritis in the wrist and hands and fingers too. As the old commercial that most reading this likely do not recall from the late 1960''s, it''s just a silly millimeter longer on each side, but here there is nothing silly at all about adding 1 millimeter to each side at all, since it''s exactly what the doctor ordered to help your Glock ]if nuthin'' else, tell ''em Dr. Hillbilly sent ''ya lookin'' fer one![ In fact, you will find that the hardest part of swapping the old release for the new one is actually taking the slide off with the old release first before accessing the lower tension spring pushing upwards against the lower center of the lever to hold it into position....once you can see that flat spring hiding down in the lower center of the frame at and just forward of the lever, just take a small screwdriver and push down lightly on the flat spring forward of the lever itself to depress the spring, then you can lift up slightly on the lever while keeping the spring depressed and simply slide it out one side ]be SURE to look at the exact positioning of the original lever and put the new one back into the same spot in the same alignment, with the small center cutout for the spring down, and the groove that engages the locking block positioned up near the top rear of the lever facing back towards the lobking block itself[, and once the new lever is centered and aligned properly you can simply relax the downward tension on the flat spring and verify that everything fits like the old one did before removal of the initial lever ]just double check the alignment....that groove should push right into the locking block and the spring should rest right up in the spring cutout and you''re ready to put the slide back on to check for proper operation and MUCH easier removal.
One alternative method of taking the original alide out and inserting this new extended one would be to rotate the frame over 90 degrees with one side of the frame facing downward, and then the old release will likely drop out by itself once the tension spring is depressed beneath the release lever. The biggest caution using this method is to look at the alignment carefully before allowing the lever to drop out the side of the frame, since it may bounce over and the actual alignment position might become lost from view as it first comes out, but if this happens just use the tips above with the tension spring riding in the center cutout along the lower edge of the lever and the lever rotated so the cutout groove going from side to side across the upper end of the lever will be facing rearward to engage into the locking block with a flush fit.
You''ll make the parts switch a heck of a lot faster than you read this post, provided you can fight the short factory release and get the slide off to perform the operation ]er, parts transplant[ and verify the proper positioning of the new piece ]up, down, front, back[, and the old piece can work as your guide if you look before taking it out. How much simpler can this upgrade be than this???....remove the slide, depress the flat spring, slide out the slide release, slide the new slide release back in with the exact same positioning, release the spring tension and make sure everything falls into the right spots, shove the slide back on and double check for proper operation and also check to see just how much easier you can grasp this new part versus the one just removed. Those 2 millimeters total really make a large difference, yet you won''t really be aware that the extra length is there until you need it.
I might add that if you have a very snug leather holster, there is a chance you might see some small tracks on the inside and outside inner walls right where the longer release lever ridges ride, but it is a very small area of contact and very shallow in the leather once the frame is low enough into the holster for the ridges to contact the leather under strong tension. If your holster is already broken in, it may not show any contact at all, and either way any contact should be secluded low enough on the inside of the holster so if it does contact it should not be visible until the Glock is out of the holster and you look down inside the empty holster ]that''s a small price to pay for the big assist that this longer piece gives, and I''ll take the longer release lever any day on all of my Glocks[.
Keep On Glockin''!

Eases field tear down, although not really needed. Review your holster before installing to make sure it doesn''t drag or bind.

This part is a must have and should be standard on all glocks from the factory. The fact that I had to spend the extra money on this was irritating. If this part was standard on all glocks from the factory than the Springfield XD and the Smith and Wesson M&P''s wouldn''t be able to compete with the glock.

I used to have great difficulty using the Glock slide release until I discovered this product. It works great on my Models 22 and 23. On my Glock 36 it sticks out too far and scratches my holster. I thought all frames were the same thickness, but I guess not. Anyway, I was going to sell my Glocks until I found this product. Now I am very happy and recommend it to all. Are you listening Glock? My local gunsmith has ordered several to keep on hand.

Grippy edges

Review Date: 04/29/2009

When I got this slide release and installed it, I noticed that it stuck out a little more, yeah, but it also seemed easier to grab with the tip of my finger and thumb. I compared the edges of it to the edges of the standard slide lock, and there are more ridges on this one, making it grippier. It''s a lot easier for me to field strip now. Great product!

I can get hold of the slide lock easily and actually get the slide off without having a coronary (or broken finger nails). I am a 62-year-old woman with a lot of dexterity and not much upper-body or hand strength. The extended slide lock makes all the difference. The price is reasonable, too, and it arrived quickly.

Just mash the spring down. Turn the Glock on it''s side and it falls out. Easy to install. Well worth the money. You can now get a good grip on it and release the slide. It saves my fingers.

Excellent product. It adds just enough extra clearance on each side of the frame to make it so much easier to use for field stripping the gun. I still don''t know why Glock doesn''t start incorporating these extended controls on all their guns from the factory??

After watching Jason Masterson''s videos I decided to give this a try. As advertised - this is an excellent modification. Easy to install. The small increase in length makes a big difference in holding down the slide lock. Speeds up shooting time. I received this in just a few days after ordering.
